Abstract

Background: Dietary nitrate from beetroot juice has been associated with modest reductions in systolic blood pressure in randomized research, but a single clinical observation cannot establish treatment efficacy. This report describes the monitoring of an adjunctive dietary practice during ongoing antihypertensive care.

Case presentation: An adult with hypertension taking amlodipine 10 mg reported dizziness and neck heaviness. Baseline blood pressure was 158/92 mmHg, with a pulse rate of 79 beats/min. Approximately 250 g of fresh beetroot was processed to obtain 70 mL of juice, administered once daily for three consecutive days alongside prescribed care. Blood pressure and pulse were assessed at baseline and three hours after the final day-3 dose; no intermediate values were documented. Final blood pressure was 143/86 mmHg and pulse rate was 83 beats/min. Dizziness and neck heaviness were not reported at the final assessment; no adverse events were documented over the brief observation. The juice nitrate concentration was not measured.

Conclusion: The case illustrates how nurses can document juice preparation, concurrent medication, measurement timing, and symptom changes. Two uncontrolled readings cannot establish that beetroot juice caused the observed blood-pressure difference or demonstrate long-term benefit and safety
